The only remains of the 2'6" gauge railway connecting the fireclay drift mine with the brickworks at Micklam is this section of embedded rail in the concrete access road to the kilns. The building was the main office and shower block and to the top left of the image can be seen the trackbed of the former Lowca Light Railway. The narrow gauge railway ran adjacent to this and I have an image that I took on a visit here in 1971 (see below). Micklam Fireclay Mine provided castng-pit hollow ware for Workington steelworks and an NCB locomotive from the adjacent Harrington Coal Preparation Plant at Lowca used to shunt wagons and prepare them for collection by the Workington steelworks locomotives which worked in tandem up the 1 in 17 incline to Copperas Hill and Lowca.

The shunting neck track is all that remains of the original single-track mainline route that opened in 1888 and was closed in 1920 following the opening of the present-day double-track route between Waterfall and Coalcliff.

It's a miracle that the driver was the only operson in the drivers cab. Usually tthe conductor is there when there are few passengers on the train.
