The back axle of an old Fiat 124 with twin wheels. It appears that this old Fiat was once a pickup which was fitted with twin wheels in order to draw turf from the bog.
Mind boggling technology!
This was the original entrance shaft leading to the Thames Tunnel of 1843 - the first tunnel ever to be built under water. The floor we are standing on has only just been inserted. Prior to that there was a sheer drop straight down to the railway that now occupies the tunnel. The scar you can see on the wall is a relic of the original staircase that once led to the tunnel. This was abandoned in 1865 when the tunnel was sold for conversion into a railway.
I spotted the shaft from up above and followed the footprints down. It looks like you can go in there for some distance. I'm just trying to show you the size of this opening with my picture, it was pretty big.
