Early Years Series: Egg in Isolation - Circa 1983

Still continuing to go through boxes and boxes of old slides... Am really pleased I re-found this one..

One of my very earliest tabletop SLR pictures taken on slide..

It follows on from the "Egg and Fork" image in it's utilisation of slanting shafts of light and of me shooting still life images within the confines of a cardboard box where I had so much more control over lighting from not much more than bedside lamps (was on a budget), but goes further and introduces my fascination with primary colours, luminosity and the interplay of light and shadow...

Also new in this is the Blue and White signature floorboard effect developed further in some of my later images.. in this case they were only white lines drawn on blue card, but it gave me the inspiration for the potential of using parallel lines to introduce a sense of perspective to some of my work..

My crappy slide scanner again destroyed all highlights and darkened the shadows, and I re-touched some of the small dust marks in photoshop, but there are still some artifacts left from sandwiching the original slide between two sheets of glass as was common back then (thought it best not to attempt removal from the glass) and I left them in this image to remind me of the days when all photography had to be SOOC.

It's also a bit smaller than original as the slide mount had rounded corners, so the edge of the first (yellowish) shaft of light has the bottom shadow missing where it terminates on the blue floor.. This also takes a bit away from the original.. but not sure whether a good or bad thing.. LOL

Also not square yet... cropping slides square resulted in smaller images being displayed back then when projected for viewing (unless you started off with larger than 35mm images) Smaller = Less impact.. pretty much always. So for maximum effect, I always used to try fill the frame (in either landscape or portrait formats) when composing through the viewfinder.

Anyways.. so much for me writing a description many will never bother reading. but thanks for looking and any comments you might leave all the same.

I just wish this was like my old days on flickr when this had a proper chance of being Explored... This is just so much better than some of my other pooh images that were.. And am still proud of it! But hey.. Life moves on and we learn to live with it.

:-) G

ps. Square version replaced with portrait for Char!
