You may have heard the rumors already, and I would like to confirm them, yes, it's true, we are ice skating on the canals in the best city in the world! It does not happen often that the canals are frozen over long enough and deep enough to allow this pleasure, so the first time you see the locals put on their skates and hit the ice, you might think you've smoked too much of our fine selection of natural herbs, but you can trust your eyes, it's real, it's happening, it's fun :D
I reallyreally need to buy new skates, I LOVE ice skating!!! Let's hope that the next Winter will be as cold and freezy :)

Amsterdam prepares for the legendary Keizer Race across the frozen Keizersgracht canal in Amsterdam that will be staged for the first time in 15 years. The Keizer race will be held this Saturday February 11th. In homes, bars and offices the talk all week has centered on whether it was cold enough for the canal water to freeze evenly, whether the snow blanket was too thick, hampering ice formation, and whether the ice would reach the required thickness needed along the entire course. Mayor Eberhard van der Laan is very pleased with the event. This is great for the city. After the Elfstedentocht, the Keizer Race, is the next best thing. Everyone dreams to be able to skate on the Amsterdam canals. With the fantastic lighting and great atmosphere it creates a very attractive picture. Former sprint world champion Jan Bos and Brecht Kramer, the sister of Sven Kramer, have already mentioned wish to participate.
This winter another way to roll around town is on skates. Ben thé Man sharpen his blades for the Keizer race and hit the ice in front of the Westerkerk church. Photo of me taken by my daughter Samantha. It doesn't happen every year, but during those winters when it's cold enough, Amsterdam's canals become all-natural ice-skating venues. It's a particularly popular activity inside the Vondelpark, Prinsengracht and Keizergracht.
De Elfstedentocht is voorlopig afgeblazen maar de IJspret in Nederland is er niet minder om. Op veel plekken lag er niet meer sinds 1997 zóveel ijs en dat geldt ook voor de Amsterdamse grachten. Amsterdam loopt er in deze ijskoude dagen al helemaal warm voor: de legendarische Keizersrace op de Keizersgracht. De kortebaanrace die vijftien jaar geleden voor de laatste keer kon plaatsvinden, zal vrijwel zeker aankomende zaterdag 11 februari 2012 worden gereden. Burgemeester Eberhard van der Laan is blij met het evenement. Dit is geweldig voor de stad. Na de Elfstedentocht komt de Keizersrace, zeker voor Amsterdammers, toch wel op de tweede plaats. Iedereen droomt er vanaf kleins af aan al van eens op onze grachten te kunnen schaatsen. En met de fantastische verlichting en alles eromheen is het ook een enorm sfeervol plaatje. |
