Once you try to enable Unity again in the CCSM you get a lot of conflicts. I found the top bar never displayed again correctly but everything else seemed to work. I was informed by someone called The Doctor on my Ubuntu article at DanLynch.org that Unity is just a Compiz plugin and you can disable it. Here's what happens when you do. You lose the top toolbar and all the main functionality. I assume you could add a Gnome panel back if you wanted. Why you would do this I'm not sure. I was just experimenting. i'm using standalone CompizWM (without DE like gnome,etc), with GTK and Xdefaults from crshd's darks++ suite,and GAIA10 emerald from fkant
the filemanager is thunar, with faenza icons.
userchrome modded firefox opening voracious with custom layout & css.
also conky at the bottom left displaying now playing song in mpd, how many mail arrive, and fuzzy clock a.k.a humanist clock :)
