Netbook hacks
One of the reasons to go to events like this is to see what stuff people are doing, using or hacks. This is an interesting one. A big trend at the moment is the use of Netbooks. In this case the Ausus EeePc. There are plenty on the market but not many Linux versions. So enterprising chaps purchase the Windows version then look for a Ubuntu Linux image and install it.
Chipsets and drivers
One of the problems I have with this is getting the hardware recognised, pesky chipsets that distro's can't get access to write drivers. But in this case it looks like Ubuntu (I'll have to check for others) have done a good job. Networking, OK, graphics drivers OK and especially video. All work fine.
Notebooks are heavy
Another observation was how Netbooks are going to replace notebooks for developers, consultants who have to lug around 2Kg+. The chap sitting next to me who was in this camp. The key bit was he was looking for a Linux Netbook but didn't want to purchase a Windows machine at greater expense only to dump the OS. This machine shows along with the fact MS is somehow in conjunction Ausus are reducing the price of Windows pre-installed machines. So this is not as much an issue as he thought.
Xubuntu on my EeePC with Compiz and Elegant Brit theme
In fullview on a windows computer the text looks blurry, but in Xubuntu itself it's perfectly sharp. Just the way the operating systems render text i guess.
