PHOTOMAGIC #1
Like many professionals, I always shoot in the NEF format, rather than JPG. Despite the slight increase in file size, shooting in NEF allows full (and more nuanced) control over more professional settings such as Exposure, Color Temperature, Hue, Lens Vignetting and Fill Light, but they're touchy and require a keen eye--not for anyone without a couple of years under your belt, to say the least.
In this example, I've taken a reasonably good photo from the holidays, and tweaked it using a few of the hidden features you can find in Adobe's Lightroom software application package. Initially, I 'upped' ('raised') the Contrast and Clarity of the image to better frame and enhance the model's form, as well as to drown out some of the harsh effects from the flash. Also, the original image lacked a bit of 'life', so I raised the Color Temperature just a touch to make the scene 'warmer'. This better reflects the more natural state of the model's original setting, and counteracts the White Balance issues that plague most pro-sumers. By pushing the Tint of the overall image by just a couple of degrees, as well as the Luminance of a single 'red' channel, you might be able to tell that the pinks of the model's coat 'POP' more than in the original image. Et voila.
All-in-all, the issue to take away here is to use a gentle touch, and to get the advice of a professional--one that makes a change from what the camera sensor 'sees' into what pleases the human 'eye'. You might not be able to tell the difference, but it's often what you don't notice that just means we're doing our job well.

Second of three...this is a shot of the pathway leading to the back of the Observatory. The clouds were amazing that day and this shot, I think, really shows them well. I personally like the final result of the small lights on the pathway. Taken at the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, CA.

For Anna
Spread your wings of faith and fly
Don?t let opportunities past you by
Rise above your impossibilities
Soar over your adversities
Don?t let doubt scheme
It destroys your hope and dreams
Doubt is your worst enemy
It brings fear and agony
Doubt closes but faith opens the door
So fly on the wings of faith and explore
You can?t see the wind but it blows
That?s the way faith flows
Without faith you can not please God
So fly on the wings of faith and rise above the odds |

was "playing" with the camera (I have stated before, 95% of what I post was taken by friends/family) and the massive red oak in my front yard "spoke" to me |

This pair of shots were taken THROUGH the 3d spectacular fancy special effects glasses they gave us at the entrance. I held them up to my 24-70 and shot away... silly. It looks AWESOME.
This was a no cameras allowed type of event, I was allowed inside with my Mark 3 for a special assignment for the San Antonio Current. Even if the event looked a lot more "trippy," with the glasses on, I had a great time running around the Majestic Theatre and trying to grab just the right moment when the lasers hit. |

The lasers were bouncing off of mirrors placed around the room..interesting.
