Amsterdam prepares for legendary Keizer ice skating Race

Please take your time... and enjoy it large on black

Amsterdam prepares for the legendary Keizer Race across the frozen Keizersgracht canal in Amsterdam that will be staged for the first time in 15 years. The Keizer race will be held this Saturday February 11th. In homes, bars and offices the talk all week has centered on whether it was cold enough for the canal water to freeze evenly, whether the snow blanket was too thick, hampering ice formation, and whether the ice would reach the required thickness needed along the entire course. Mayor Eberhard van der Laan is very pleased with the event. This is great for the city. After the Elfstedentocht, the Keizer Race, is the next best thing. Everyone dreams to be able to skate on the Amsterdam canals. With the fantastic lighting and great atmosphere it creates a very attractive picture. Former sprint world champion Jan Bos and Brecht Kramer, the sister of Sven Kramer, have already mentioned wish to participate.

This winter another way to roll around town is on skates. Ben thé Man sharpen his blades for the Keizer race and hit the ice in front of the Westerkerk church. Photo of me taken by my daughter Samantha. It doesn't happen every year, but during those winters when it's cold enough, Amsterdam's canals become all-natural ice-skating venues. It's a particularly popular activity inside the Vondelpark, Prinsengracht and Keizergracht.

Lemon-scented gums in Kings Park, Fraser Avenue. Perth, Australia

Fraser Avenue was officially named in 1931 in honour of Sir Malcolm Fraser, Surveyor General of Western Australia 1870-1883.
Originally the red-flowering gums (Corymbia ficifolia) was planted along Fraser Avenue to honour Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1898.
But in 1938 they were replaced by lemon-scented gums (Corymbia citriodora syn. Eucalyptus citriodora) from the east coast of Australia. During the 1970s the lemon-scented gums flourished. Today, the interlocking canopies form a majestic avenue that provide a well-photographed entry statement to Kings Park and Botanic Garden.

Really amazing that eastern gum trees survive better there than local red-flowering gums. Go figure...

Water Police Court c.1853

See where this picture was taken. [?]

The three buildings which are now the Justice and Police Museum were all built for the needs of the Sydney Water Police. This specialised force was created to control shipping and enforce the Harbour Regulations Act and the Water Police Act. In the 1840s the Water Police headquarters was at Cadman?s Cottage in The Rocks, but in 1851 the present site, then vacant land on the perimeter of the Governor?s Domain, was dedicated as a Water Police Office and Court. Built to Edmund Blacket?s design, using Bennelong Point sandstone, the new building, today known as Traffic Court 1, was begun in 1853 and completed in 1856, with an entry on to Albert Street. This building remained relatively unchanged until in 1899 Walter Vernon added a waiting-room and an accountant?s ofice (now largely demolished).

There was still need for an adjacent Watch House, so Blacket?s successor as Colonial Architect, Alexander Dawson, in 1857 designed a two-storied building, fronting on to Phillip Street, which opened in 1858. A stone kitchen was built behind, now the Shrine of Remembrance. Two holding cells were built in 1858 and two more were added in 1875. The upper storey accommodated policemen and their families.

In 1870 the jurisdiction of the Water Police was much extended by the Colonial Secretary, who divided the city into zones: the Water Police became responsible for ordinary terrestrial crime in all the harbour-side and river-side suburbs from Watsons Bay to Manly and as far into the city as King Street and Hyde Park. This created pressure for an additional court-room and in 1885-6 James Barnet inserted a new Police Court between the two existing buildings. Despite its clerestory, the new court had ventilation problems and almost at once hydraulic air-conditioning equipment (partly surviving) was installed. In 1899 the next Government Architect, Walter Vernon, installed two witness rooms in Barnet?s court-room.

The Water Police moved its headquarters to Dawes Point in 1913, and the police station became subsidiary to George Street North (Division 4) from 1917 to 1926. The Water Police again occupied the Phillip Street station from 1926 until 1933, but then handed it over to No 4 Division as a headquarters in lieu of George Street North. In 1933 No 4 Division removed the south wall of Dawson?s charge-room to make a larger facility, which has now reverted to its pre-1933 configuration. The police station finally closed in 1985 and the police moved to The Rocks.

Meanwhile the two court-rooms flanking the police station closed from 1918 until 1924, when they reopened as Traffic Court 1 and 2. These closed in 1980. After 1985, the three buildings became a Justice and Police Museum under the Historic Houses Trust.
