The Journeyman -- Der Geselle

I had the pleasure to meet some Gesellen at the station of Kiel in Germany. For the "one good turn deserves another" they came to ask some money because i took a picture of them. But the one guy who came to me didn't just ask some money, oh no, he told me a poem first and then asked for some money, wonderful!! To be honest and maybe even a bit ashamed to say that, i never heard of the "Fahrenden Handwerksgesellen auf der Walz" before. I do now, thanks to Bixxy who told me a lots about them and i find it a most interesting story i must say. Below is a short explanation of the Gesellen, unfortunatly Wikipedia has no French traduction of this article.

The word 'journeyman' comes from the French word journée, meaning the period of one day; this refers to their right to charge a fee for each day's work. They would normally be employed by a master craftsman, but would live apart and might have a family of their own. A journeyman could not employ others. In contrast, an apprentice would be bound to a master, usually for a fixed term of seven years, and lived with the master as a member of the household, receiving most or all of their
compensation in terms of room and board.

In parts of Europe, as in later medieval Germany, spending time as a journeyman (Geselle), moving from one town to another to gain experience of different workshops, was an important part of the training of an aspirant master. Carpenters in Germany have retained the tradition of traveling journeymen until today, although only a small minority still practice it. In later medieval England, however, most journeymen remained as employees throughout their careers, lacking the financial resources to set up their own workshops[citation needed]. In France, they were known as Compagnons.

The terms jack and knave are sometimes used as informal words for journeyman. Hence 'jack of all trades, master of none' ? someone who is educated in several fields of trade, but is not yet skilled enough in any to set up their own workshop as a master.

Journeyman

This may be the one of the silliest band photos I've ever seen, but it fits I suppose. I learned during this "shoot" that I am horrible at giving directions for posed shots. I'd much rather take candid photos on stage! They were good sports though. Some of the outtakes are hilarious!

Anyway, this is Journeyman. Well, the guy in the greyish hat is Journeyman (also known as Chris) and the rest of these guys were the hired help for the night. They performed in a battle of the bands-type competition at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco a couple weeks ago, and they were amazing! Especially for a group of random musicians that had practice together for a week ...

Journeyman is a rapper with rock influences, so while Joey was laying down the beats (yeah, hip-hop beats - he's awesome like that), Mike was laying down the riffs, Randall the grooves and Chris and Junior with the melodies. They had the crowd up and dancing.

Unfortunately, the judges chose another act for the winner that night, but it was still a fun night. Joey's still talking about it. :)

From left to right: Joey (drums), Randall (bass), Journeyman (rhymes), Mike (guitar), Junior (sax).

Journeyman

He is the genius behind the project. He seemed pretty happy with how the show went.

Personally, I think he's an amazingly talented rapper. He raps about issues, not about big booty hoes and bling. He's eloquent, respectful, and thought-provoking. Check him out: www.myspace.com/journeyman

Joey had the great honor of playing at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco last Saturday, and I had the great honor of watching him. :) A buddy of his from high school qualified for a battle of the bands-type competition, and asked Joey to play drums for him. His friend is a rapper, so he was laying down some badass hip-hop beats. It was pretty dang awesome.

For those of you not in the Bay Area, the Great American is kind of a big deal in San Francisco. They don't get the HUGE bands, but they get the big bands. Local bands rarely play there unless they have an album out, have toured around the state/country, or are participating in events like this one. Joey was giddy all week. :)

Usually the drummer gets stuck on the back of the stage, in the dark, and I rarely get any good photos of them. At this show, he was still in the back, but they had some lights on him, which was amazing. The photos I got of him at this show are the best I've gotten so far. This one is my favorite, by far. :)

More photos from the show to come. :)
