Computer operating systems (OS) do they evolve like a biological system?
I think they do the first PC's and OX's had limited function which was developed by the software producers and they protected their code. Now that was fine ,there was no alternative for most of us, but it only had function that the management put there. If that was a plant it would be a colonizer invading new ground and an apomictic en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apomixis plant like bramble(Rubus sp) . when you have a more developed eco system then apomixs is not the best strategy . Yes you have protected your best code, but it evolves slowly or not at all.To develop further you need to be open pollenated , to find the best niche to exploit,
So now we see the OS's that are open sourced developing rapidly ,the work started by Richard Stallman en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman the gnu project and the GPL en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License has lead to masses of OS's. Linus Torvalds en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_Torvalds with Linux has popularized open source OS's.Some forms have become very diverse Linux puppy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_Linux by Barry Kauler www.puppylinux.com/bkauler/ has 200 or so variants. Some forms will be dead ends , but because any one can edit them, their development will be fast.
Will the big software suppliers do the same, well to survive the have to keep fit ,some are allowing 3rd party apps , can they change fast enough? www.ted.com/index.php/talks/richard_dawkins_on_militant_a...
A graphic I kludged together for aftered.tv's news story this week about the open source textbook movement :) Clockwise from left: Raymond, Lessig, Stallman, Corley, and Torvalds.
Richard Stallman on bass (John Paul Jones). Linus Torvalds on drums (Meg White). Guy Steele on guitar (Jack White). Daft Punk for vocals (sorry Stallman!)
Birthday Presents! specifically presents from K's mother and brother. Pictured are "Just For Fun" by Linus Torvalds and David Diamond, "The Best of 2600: A Hacker Odyssey" edited by Emmanuel Goldstein, a brend-new, unscrambled Brain Twist, and the "puzzler's box of frustration," all from Thinkgeek.com. Thanks guys!
I bought the hockey stick from his mother's friend. Linus' mother was kind to send me a document with an early photo attached. She told me Linus wasn't great at hockey but that he found success in other areas.
Estos son los hackers o los programadores del kernel linux juntos.
¿Donde esta Linus Torvalds?..
¿Donde esta Alan Cox?
¿Cuantas mujeres hay?
