The AmericanAirlines Arena, at 601 Biscayne Boulevard, was built as a replacement for the Miami Arena and was designed by the architecture firms Arquitectonica and 360 Architecture. The arena, sometimes referred to as "triple-A" or "A3", was inaugurated with a concert by Gloria Estefan on December 31, 1999. It is home to the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA), who hosted their first game on January 2, 2000 defeating the Orlando Magic 111-103. The Miami Sol fo the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) played at the arena from the team's birth in 2000 until the team's folding in 2002.
The AmericanAirlines Arena seats has a basketball capacity of 19,600, with 2,105 club seats, 80 luxury suites, and 76 private boxes. The Waterfront Theater, Florida's largest theater, is housed within the arena and can seat between 3,000 and 5,800. A3 is known for its unusual scoreboard, designed by artist Christopher Janney, which draws on the underwater anemone forms and changes colors depending on the atmosphere.
In addition to hosting basketball and concerts, the American Airlines arena has hosted the 2004 and 2005 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's), where celebrities arrived via yacht instead of limousine; the For Darfur Benefit concert in 2008; the first UFC event in the state of Florida in 2003; and numerous WCW and WW wrestling events. |
